Prof. Cochran, I am trying to avoid having to buy the Reader and wanted to use the old one from last year. What are your thoughts on that? A Student |
Dear Student, The Reader has been revised from last year. Last year's reader is not the same as this year's. Dr. C. |
Dear Professor Cochran, I am trying to enroll in Stats 10 for Winter Quarter, however, the only discussion that I can make is closed. Thus, I enrolled in an open discussion that conflicts with my current schedule. So, I was wondering if students have to attend their enrolled discussion (for quizzes etc) or can they attend any discussion. Thank you for your help. prof. cochran, I am enrolling in your stats 10 next quarter and I am wondering how the structure of the class will be like. Will there be homework or quizes in section because I may be having some serious conflicts with the discussion times. Thank you. Sincerely, |
Dear Students, See the web site syllabus. Dr. C. |
Dear Professor, On the homework questions, do we do the Exercise Set questions or Review Questions at the end of each chapter? Please reply to me, or tell us in class tomorrow. Thanks for your help. |
Dear Student, That information is in the syllabus. Dr. C. |
Dear Professor Cochran, I am currently enrolled in your Stats 10 class. As of right now, my schedule does not allow me to attend any of your office hours. I was wondering if you were considering scheduling any addition office hours, or it i could make an appt to ask you questions about homework or for the midterms. Also, in preparing for your midterms, do you tend to focus on the problems given in the book--for homework?? What can i do to get a better feel for the type of exams that you will give?? Thank you for your time. |
Ms , Try using the TA's office hours. They don't overlap with mine. Check out the web site for help on exams. the overheads book gives sample questions. Dr. C. |
Hi Dr.Cochran, I just enrolled in your lec today. I missed the entire first week and mon this week. Therefore, I did not receive hw assignment when you handed out. I was just wondering if there is anyway I can make this up. And also, since there is lec notes, I assume materials taught in the first week of class would all be on there. Otherwise, could you please tell me what I missed importantly last week? Thank you. |
Dear Mr. , You get to drop 1 hw--that'll be the one. There are no makeups. It is difficult to know what you might think was important and not in the lecture notes....You've got a lot of catching up to do. I trust you will work hard. Dr. C. |
Hi, I was wondering if you had any tips on how to prepare for the midterm. I have been attending lectures and have been keeping up with the readings. It seems like he hasn't covered that much material in lecture. Will the test emphasize more material from the lectures, or on the readings? How much detail should we focus on from material in the readings because there is a lot! Also, are you planning on having a review session for the midterm? Sorry-one last thing, are there any old tests, or sample questions we can practice with so that we will know what to expect from the tests? I heard from people that his exams were quite tough, please tell me that this is just a false rumor. Thanks, |
Dear Student, Since I ain't no guy and you're not enrolled in my class, I'm assuming you didn't really intend to send me this email. Ooops. Hope you pass your midterm... Dr. C. |
Hello Professor
Cochran.... I have a humble request...and a terrible story to accompany it..It all began in lecture today, when you spoke of your red sports car and the almighty bruin pedestrian who did not receive a ticket from the long awaiting policeman...that was when it dawned on me that I had forgotten to display my parking permit....knowing the efficiency of the UCLA parking enforement..I bolted out of class (I apologize for the disruption) and dashed toward lot 11...fortunately I did not find a ticket on my car...(unusual...considering I have been blessed with more than my share of parking tickets)...unfortunately...in my panick I had forgotten to turn in my homework.....that brings me to my MOST humble request...is there ANY POSSIBLE WAY that I could turn in my homework???? Please consider and thank you for your time... The student responds: Thanks anyhow Professor Cochran... I'm glad you enjoyed my honestly terrible story....but I guess in it all...it was a good trade...at least I'm not in deeper debt =) thanks for responding....I will definitely see you in class.....keep chuckling....PS....if you could..please stay away from cars, cops and tickets on days that homework is due! =) They make a great story... |
Dear Student, Great story. But, sorry, no. Like I said, when the homework is due it gets put on a hopper and is rapidly processed, so there isn't any latitude. But 1> you get to drop one homework, so that can be the one, and 2> look at it this way--you traded 6 pts for not getting a ticket...isn't that worth something to you? I'm still chuckling. Thanks for the early morning laugh. See ya in class. |
Professor Cochran- Can you clarify where the homework problems come from. In chapter two there is an Exercise Set A as well as Review Problems, and in chapter three there are multiple Exercise sets as well as review problems. It wasn't until I read chapter two and
completed the problems in Exercise Set A that I realized
that there was a Review section and that A student |
Ms. Be sure to read your syllabus carefully. In there it states specifically that the homework problems are the review problems, special review problems, and lab manual problems. See ya in class. Dr. C. |
Hi Professor Cochran,
I know that you deal with more than your fair share of exam conflicts, so consider this request as my attempt to help you fill your quota. I know that university policy is really strict on finals, but I wanted to see if there was anything I could do that could help me have the exam finished by 4:00. I work at a nearby middle/high school coaching both volleyball and varsity softball, so I have my share of time conflicts, one of them being that I have games at 4:30 and 5:30 on Wednesday. If there was any way I could start the exam 30 min or one hour before the start time, that would be ideal for me, but I understand about room conflicts and proctor availability. If there is anything else you could suggest to help me resolve this, I would really appreciate it. Given the university's strict final policy, I know you don't have much flexibility here, but I at least wanted to take a shot and see what I could do about it. On a personal note, I enjoyed your class this quarter, and just so you can match a name with a face, I am the student who volunteered to be weighed in front of the class early in the quarter. That was a big risk, weighting the scale 8 pounds too heavy, especially if there was going to be a girl volunteer, but I didn't mind. I also want you to know that someone out there does appreciate your subtle gay humor. It makes the class a lot funnier, and believe it or not, we actually are listening. It's also really cool to see successful female research professors at this university, with the large gender disparity among faculty, so thanks for being a role model. Ok, hope that wasn't too much brown-nosing, but if you could get back to me about the final thing, that would be great. Thanks. Sincerely, A student |
Dear Student,
I think that your part time job will understand that being a student and doing well is your first priority--sorry--can't bend the rules on this one. Hey, thanks for volunteering and being a good sport. It takes a lot of courage to get weighed in front of your peers! Do well on your exam. Dr. C. |
Hi professor cochran. I am in your stats
10 class but I did not make it to class this morning to turn in my hw.
This weekend I have felt only a little sick and thought that I would be
ok, but my sore throat has turned into a pretty bad case of strep throat
because this morning I was in too much discomfort to come to class. I already have the hw assignment finished, and even though I know it is against your original policy, I would really like to still be able to turn it in because I was not expecting to wake up this morning in so much pain. I want to thank you for your time and consideration. |
sorry you're feeling bad. hope you get
better soon. That's why everyone gets to drop a homework. because things like this come up. dr. C. |
