About

Research: Dave Zes employs strategic thinking to create novel algorithmic solutions to unique problems. He is passionate about not just statically solving problems offline, but actualizing the technology to implement solutions for real-time use. Examples include the world’s first online scoring algorithm for Thurstonian forced-choice psychometric personality assessments, word cloud optimization for infographics, and psychometric profile/fit benchmarking. Dave was awarded patents for the latter two. He is currently working on a number of avocational projects, including collaboration with sports medical experts in forecasting future injury risk of athletes.

Pedagogy: Dave is devoted to bringing appreciation and execution of statistical and scientific methods to students. In his short time so far at UCLA, he has greatly enjoyed and benefitted from expert mentors in General Education Foundation of Scientific Inquiry (GE FSI), and Peer-Assisted Reflections on Student Learning (PAROSL), and, of course, his colleagues.

Et Cetera: On clement days, you may find Dave bicycling through, over, and around the streets of Long Beach and surrounding communities. On any evening, you may find him enjoying djent-metal.

Meatloaf The Food, Meatloaf The Singer

My tribute to both Meatloaf the entertainer, and also, meatloaf the food.

This is a very straightforward application of image recognition. Shown is a 10 x 10 layout of the 100 test photos.

If you zoom way in, first row, 6th photo from the left, you'll find the only miss-classified testing photo (on the top is "singer (food)"). If you think about it, the plate of meatloaf and mac-n-cheese could be a face, and the fork, could be a microphone. I suspect this is what threw the algorithm off.

While I do enjoy meatloaf the food, I never really got into Meatloaf, the entertainer, but I definitely have lots of respect for his talent.
