Country: Perfectia. Population: 1 million. Culture: 70% Jacodian, 30% Stoyanist. Language: Perfectian. Geography/Climate/Industry: Amazingly enough, Perfectia is shaped like a perfect square, running from exactly 0 to 10 units in both longitude and latitude. The climate of Perfectia is mild and tropical, and its primary industry is tourism. The strikingly horizontal Southern border of Perfectia is entirely coastline, and thousands and thousands of visitors flock each year to its sandy beaches and warm waters of the Watanabe Sea. The Southern and Western portions of Perfectia are warmer and dryer, while the Northern and Eastern parts routinely experience freezing temperatures, especially in Winter. History: Jacodians and Stoyanists have been vying for control of Perfectia for thousands of years. After 100 years of peaceful rule by the prevailing Jacodians, the Stoyanists took power in the 1970s, led by Marie-Colette van Lieshout, a charismatic woman who was adored by Jacodians and Stoyanists alike. Marie-Colette was a benevolent ruler who invested heavily in Perfectia's education, infrastructure, and public projects, including the construction of parks and the protection of its beaches. However, many Stoyanists felt that Marie-Colette spent too heavily on public programs, and various industries were unsatisfied with her restrictive legislations. She was succeeded by her nephew, Pierre Bremaud, who was concerned primarily with corporate interests, and who cut back heavily on public programs. Pierre spent much of his time at Perfectia's golf course and country club, and cut spending on police by 50%. Since his rule began in 1995, crime rates have risen dramatically, and the Vere-Jones family, which engages in organized crime, has become increasingly powerful. In 1998-1999, Pierre sold off various public lands to corporate buyers and wealthy citizens, including Centerfield Park which was sold to the Vere-Jones family, who converted it into an enormous hotel and casino. The wealth disparity between Jacodians and Stoyanists has also increased significantly during Pierre's reign. Today, 95% of the expensive property near the Southern beaches is owned by wealthy Stoyanists, while the villages in the North are crowded with impoverished Jacodians. Partly due to the increased interest in gambling attributed to the Vere-Jones Casino, a daily national lottery was instituted by the government in 2002 and run by Perfectia's Commerce Secretary, Yosihiko Ogata. Yosihiko is renowned as a fair and honest public servant, but in recent months many have speculated that the lottery may not have been implemented fairly, perhaps due to corruption of lower-level government officials. The file "perfectiadata1.txt" contains the following. The first line is the number of lottery winners. This is followed by a list of (sorted) x-coordinates of the locations at which the lottery winners live. Next is a list of y-coordinates of the locations where the lottery winners live. Finally, this is followed by a list of 100 values indicating the average income (in thousands of dollars per year) within each square portion of Perfectia. For instance, the first value of income (63.13551) indicates the mean income for residents in the range [0,1) x [0,1). The second value (71.38273) indicates the mean income for residents in the range [1,2) x [0,1], etc. Assignment: Analyze this data and summarize your findings in a well-written report consisting of 5-7 pages of text, followed by as many figures and/or tables as you'd like. Your analysis should include graphical summaries of the points and covariate data, K-functions and their variants, and the fit of (at least one) loglinear intensity model. Comment on the fit of your model and interpret this and all your findings in terms of the subject matter context, as best you can. Due: Thursday, March 22, 2pm. Final projects may be submitted by email only if they are in pdf format. Otherwise, a hard copy should be placed under my office door (MS 8965), or in my mailbox in the Statistics Department mailroom, or handed to me in person. Some files that may help you are available on the course website, such as http://www.stat.ucla.edu/~frederic/201b/W07/perfectiaanalysis101.s
