Research Interests

My research is at the interface between statistics and biology. My primary research interest lies in developing new statistical methods for understanding biological questions, especially those related to large-scale genomic and transcriptomic data.

My research activities have been focusing on identifying, formulating, and resolving important, yet not previously addressed statistical questions arising from the frontiers of biology. The specific topics I have examined include:
  • Bioinformatics:
    • Modeling next-generation RNA sequencing data for identifying and quantifying full-length mRNA transcripts
    • Identification of gene-gene and protein-DNA relationships using diverse genomic data
    • Comparison of developmental time courses of different species using transcriptomic data.
  • Statistics:
    • Measure of dependence
    • Hierarchical modeling for integrating multiple replicate samples
    • Regularized regression

Aug 2016: Wei, Yiling, and Jessica published a new article, which is about a method "TROM" for comparing transcriptomes within one species or between different species, on Statistics in Biosciences.

Jun 2016: Jason Mao, Yiling Chen and Yimeng Jia will graduate from UCLA and receive their Bachelor's degrees. Congratulations!

Jun 2016: Zahra Razeee Received the Dissertation Year Fellowship. Congratulations Zahra!

May 2016: Jessica Li received the UCLA Faculty Research Grant / Trans-disciplinary Seed Grant.

Jan 2016: We had two papers accepted by APBC 2016 and published on BMC Genomics: the NMFP paper by Yuting and Jessica, and the EPOM paper by Wei, Zahra and Jessica.

Jun 2015: Jessica Li received the UCLA Faculty Career Development Award.

Jun 2015: Jessica Li received the Hellman Fellows Award.

Mar 2015: Jessica published a perspective with Dr. Mark Biggin, titled "Statistics requantitates the central dogma" on Science.
