The high schools chosen are the current sites for UCLA's Student Initated Outreach Center. The data presented is from the 2003-04 academic year. It reflects the schools' performance on standardized tests. Variable names: school: name of the school api_04: 2004 API growth api_03: 2003 API base gro_target: 2003-2004 growth target gro_actual: 2003-2004 growth improv: indicates if there was schoolwide and comparable improvement awards: indicates if eligible for awards frpl: percentage of students given free/reduced price lunches eng_learn: percentage of students that are english language learners track: indicates if the school is multi-track year round avg_size: average size of class room parent_ed: percentage of parents with college degree or higher full_cred: percentage of teachers that have full credentials afric, asian, nat_am_alaskan, filipino, hispan, pac_isl, white: percentage of students at school that or of african, asian, native american/alaskan, filipino, hispanic or latino, pacific islander, or white ethnic descent. Research that the data could be used for include whether school performance is related to teacher certification, the number of English Language Learners, the ethnic breakdown of the school, average class size, parent education level etc. Units for ethnic breakdowns and english learners are number of students under category per total population of students at the school. Similarly units for parent education level is number of parents under category per total population of parents. This means that the following variables are percentages: full_cred, eng_learn, avg_size, parent_ed, afric, asian, nat_am_alaskan, hispan, pac_isl, white. The units for average class size is number of students.
