This data was collected by the the U.S. Census, describing the National population change and certain estimated components of the population change from April 1, 2000 to July 1, 2004. This was released in December of 2004 and the observations are sorted alphabetically by states. The Population Estimates Program publishes total population estimates annualy. Other publications they do through the internet also also includes demographic components of change (births, deaths, and migration). The estimates they have are usually are for the present and the past, while the projections are estimates of the population for future dates. They developed these estimates with the guidance of the Federal State Cooperative Program for Population Estimates (FSCPE). These estimates are used in federal funding allocations, as the denominators for vital rates and per capita time series, as survey controls, and in monitoring recent demographic changes.
