Instructions for Essay

Your assignment is to write up a complete solution/discussion to one of the problems given. You might have a topic of your own you'd like to write about, and this is strongly encouraged. However, you should run it by me first.

Essays will be graded on their lucidity and the strength of your logic. I don't want to have to scratch my head and try to understand what you really meant; I want a clear, readable description of why you believe the answer is what you say it is.

Don't pad your answer with excess verbiage. Some of the questions ask for a numerical answer; state the problem, give your answer, and explain why your answer is true. Other questions ask you for your opinion, or ask you to think about how something is done; state the problem, give your ideas, support your ideas, and then summarize.

I'm not going to use a ruler to check that your essay is the right length, nor am I going to count words. The "right" length is whatever length is needed to succinctly make your case. (But do try to keep this less than two pages.) If, after reading your solution, I still have questions in my mind as to how you did it or what you were thinking, then it is not long enough. If, on the other hand, you write things that have already been said or are irrelevant, then it is too long.

Your rough draft is due on on Friday, February 21. I will try to get a copy with comments back to you by the following Friday. After that, you can come and see me if you have questions about the comments.

Good luck!
