1. The answer is (d). With (a) the averages are too low. With (b) the SDs are too small and with (c) the SDs are too big and the correlation is too high.
8. (a) 42 inches
(b) 2.5 inches

for (a) 42 inches is the approximate center of the x variable.
You can see it if you were to "smash" the data down on the
horizontal axis. (b) this is about 1/2 the vertical distance
above (and below) the center of the y variable to it's most
extreme point. (c) given the choices, this is most reasonable.
(d) it's the line going through the average and through all points
which are an equal number of SDs from their avearge.
