STAT 100A: Introduction to Probability

Office hours: MW 12-1pm, 8971 Math Sciences Building.
This course is an introduction to probability theory.
Topics
Basic concepts; Random variables; Expectation, variance;
Joint distributions, covariance; Conditioning; Limiting theorems.
There is no textbook. Exams will be based on lecture notes and the notes that I will
post on-line.
(1) Weekly homework assignments (40%).
(2) Midterm (20%, Friday of the fifth week, in class).
(3) Final exam (40%, Thursday, December 09, 2010, 11:30 AM - 2:30 PM). The final is
cumulative, with emphasis (more than 70%) on the second half.

Homework fair play policies:
(1) Assigned every weekend (a email notice will be sent to you to inform
you about the assignment), due next Friday 5:00pm. Please put your homework
in the black bin on the wall outside my office 8971 Math Sciences Building.
(2) You can also turn in your homework Friday after the lecture. But please
do not work on your homework during the lecture.
(3) Graded homework will be returned by TA during discussions. You can check
the scores of your homework assignments on my.ucla.edu.
(4) No late homework is accepted, but exception can be made with valid reasons.
(5) You can discuss with your fellow students or others about homework problems.
But you must write your homework completely by yourself.
(6) For all questions and concerns about the homework (such as missing
homework scores or request for regrading), please contact the TA.
Exam fair play policies:
(1) The exams are close-book and proctored.
(2) A formula sheet is allowed. It is half page, one sided,
and hand written, for both midterm and final.
(3) Please bring in a calculator, but no graphical calculators or other
electronic devices are allowed.
(4) It is a possibility that multiple versions of the exams will be used.
(5) During the exams, please do not sit together with your friends or people you know.
(6) It is strictly prohibited to talk to your fellow students during the exams.
(7) No questions will be answered during the exams.
(8) After the exams, you can check the scores of your exams on my.ucla.edu.
(9) For all questions and concerns about exams (such as request for
regrading), please contact the TA.
