STAT 100B: Introduction to Mathematical Statistics

This course is an introduction to statistical methods and theories. It also covers
some topics on machine learning and data mining.
Topics:
(1) Statistical inference in one-sample problem: point estimate,
hypothesis testing, confidence interval.
(2) Linear regression, least squares, best linear unbiased estimator.
(3) Maximum likelihood, logistic regression, Bayesian decision theory,
likelihood ratio test, machine learning.
There is no textbook. Exams will be based on lecture notes and the notes that I will
post on-line.
Coursework:
(0) Attendance (10%) enforced by quizzes.
(1) Weekly homework assignments (40%).
(2) Midterm (20%, Friday Feb 10, 2012, in class. A review lecture will be given by TA on Feb 8).
(3) Final exam (30%, Friday, March 23, 2012, 11:30 AM - 2:30 PM). The final is cumulative,
with emphasis (more than 70%) on the second half.

Homework fair play policies:
(1) Assigned every weekend (a email notice will be sent to you to inform
you about the assignment), due next Friday in class.
(2) Graded homework will be returned by TA during discussions. You can check
the scores of your homework assignments on my.ucla.edu.
(3) No late homework is accepted, but exception can be made with valid reasons.
(4) You can discuss with your fellow students or others about homework problems.
But you must write your homework completely by yourself in your own words.
(5) For all questions and concerns about the homework (such as missing
homework scores or request for regrading), please contact the TA at
eric.fox@stat.ucla.edu
Exam fair play policies:
(1) The exams are close-book and proctored.
(2) A formula sheet is allowed. It is half page, one sided,
and hand written.
(3) Please bring in a calculator, but no graphical calculators or other
electronic devices are allowed.
(4) It is a possibility that multiple versions of the exams will be used.
(5) It is strictly prohibited to sit together next to your friends.
(6) It is strictly prohibited to talk to your fellow students during the exams.
(7) No questions (including questions for clarification) will be answered during the exams.
(8) After the exams, you can check the scores of your exams on my.ucla.edu.
(9) No accomodations will be made regarding taking exams at a different time.
(10) Students who need extra time for exams must do it through OSD.
